Tullio Vorano was born in 1946, Labin, where he went to (Italian) primary school and Croatian high school; he graduated in art history and history from the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb.
He spent the whole of his career, from 1968, in the People’s Museum in Labin, as curator-manager. He was twice acting director of the adult education establishment in Labin; for a year (1971) he was a part time history teacher in the Mate Blažina High School, Labin. For one term of office he was a delegate in the Republican Culture SIZ and member of the Croatian Museum Council. From 2004 to 2006 he was leader of the Association of Museum Officers and Gallerists of Istria; he was a member of the Council of the Historical Archives of Pazin, and a member of the Managing Council of the Ethnographical Museum of Istria in Pazin. As representative of the Italian Community of Labin he was five times elected municipal and later city councillor. He led and guided the renovation of the museum building and the establishment of the new permanent display of the Labin People’s Museum, which is part of the Workers Educational Association in Labin. He is particularly interested in the life and work of Matija Vlačić (Mathias Flacius), and managed the opening of the Mathias Flacius Illyricus Memorial Collection in Labin. He also organised the restoration of a cycle of Baroque paintings and the renovation of the Church of St Mary the Consoler in Labin, and spurred the opening of a Religious Artworks Collection.
The other areas of his interest are the development of Labin minds, Istrian coal mining, the workers’ movement in Labin area, miners’ strikes, and he authored the book Istrian Coal Mines, Four Centuries of Mining in Istria (1997).
He wrote two museum guides (2004, 2006), the foreword to a photographic monograph by Virgilio Giuricino Setting of an Age. He is author of a collection of papers about the working class movement and the People’s Liberation War in Istria, the working class movement of the Labin area, 1921-1941, with wider references to Istria. He has translated and edited Labin Historical Chronicle by Herman Stemberger (1983).
He has collaborated with the Historical Research Centre in Rovinj, the Labin Italian Community and the journal Istra. In Labinska komuna he has published numerous articles about Labin societies and associations, and with the tourist office of Labin has taken part in the project Labin Art Republic. He also translates from Italian, and as well as technical texts has translated the novel of Diego Zandel An Istrian Story. He has won the Silver Plaque of the Labin Republic.
