Antun Karaman was born in Dubrovnik in 1945. After high school, he enrolled in the Faculty of Philosophy of Zagreb University to read art history and French, graduating in 1970. At the same faculty, in 1986, he completed a post-graduate course with a dissertation on Antun Masle, Life and Works, and in 1997 received his doctorate with a dissertation on the Colourism of the Dubrovnik Painters’ Circle.
From 1970 to 1999 he worked in the Museum of Modern Art, Dubrovnik, doing the job of director, and from 199 he has been museum adviser. Along with considerable original work in the museum and exhibition activity, he has published several scholarly works and numerous art reviews, essays, critiques about individual artists in catalogues of exhibitions, periodicals and dailies. He was one of the founders of the biennial Mediterranean Encounters, which was held from 1995 to 1999 in the Museum of Modern Art, Dubrovnik. He wrote the screenplays for TV films about painters Ivo Dulcic, Đuro Pulitika and Antun Masle, Josip Škerlj and for the TV exhibitions of Škerlj, Luka Peko, Dubravka Lošić and Josip Ivanović.
From 1991 to 1992 he was on active duty in the Homeland War. He is a member of the veterans’ association HVIDRA, of the Croatian Museum Association and of AICA Croatia. For his work he was decorated with the Order of the Croatian Daystar with Figure of Marko Marulić in 1996 and in 1998 with the annual Culture Prize of the Dubrovačko-neretvanska County.
From 1991 to 1995 he worked as lecturer at the Faculty of Tourism and Foreign Trade in Dubrovnik. He was elected associate professor for the subject cultural heritage and culture in tourism as a result of the decision of the council of the Faculty of Philosophy, Zagreb University. He has authored nine books and numerous scholarly papers, studies, critiques, and forewords to exhibition catalogues.
